Down on Crawford's Farm
We found a spare shed in our garden and
have turned it over to some
very free range chickens, ducks and guinea fowl
Started
with twenty Isa Warren hens from Painsford Farm then
swapped a case of glasses
for six Muscovy ducks, there are now thirteen!
We also have twenty Lowman Browns, four Khaki Campbells, two Aylesbury ducks
and five or six guinea fowl, they don't stay still for very long!!
Duck and hen eggs are used in the inn and we will do something with the
guinea fowl eggs if we can find them!
Muscovy's have taken to going for a swim in the river everyday
so far they are all coming back at tea time.
They really have been a lot of fun and I must thank Peter, Nicola and
Anna
for all the help,
as emergency vets and chicken and duck advisors, thanks
It's been a hard winter so far with our flock,
Bloody foxes have taken both of the Aylesbury's, all the Khaki Cambells
and quite a few of the chickens and Muscovies.
We will be restocking in February with some chickens from Painsford farm
and
hopefully we will get a good year with the Muscovies as we still have
one bloke left!

First Swim!
Sad update;
All the ducks and all but four of the chickens were taken by foxes
during the winter and early Spring,
a friend took the last four chickens to save them.
I now have a new more fox proof coup nearer the house with four Sussex
light and
two Welsummers in there, waiting for the eggs,....
Somehow the
guinea fowl survived and are now extremely free
range!
I would happily throttle a fox with my bare hands!
Beautiful eggs from the Light Sussex and one of the Welsummers turned
out to be a boy!
Looking forward to some chicks in the spring |
